On this day: I Gotta Right to Sing the Blues
On December 8, 1957, Billie recorded a live version of the Harold Arlen song “I Gotta Right to Sing the Blues.” That could very well have been her anthem.
Judy Garland sang the song during the opening for her 1960s TV show. Judy, whose life was no yellow brick road, had her share of misery, too.
It’s a tossup who had more right to sing this song. Billie? Or Judy?
Ella Fitzgerald (filmed in 1958) and Louis Armstrong (recorded in 1933) also did the song justice.
